A Writer and Three Script Editors Walk Into a Bar

I feel like we've been talking a lot about Story lately - be it at work, on the podcast, or playing D&D. And I think this short film does a great job of reminding me that you should never let the details (even though they may be important) get in the way of a good story.

Jason Allen Ashlock - The Story Teller's Secret

A capture of my favorite talk at SXSW. It borrows heavily from Josh's earlier post on story arcs, but positions story well as to why we use it and how its so convincing to change people's minds and behaviors.

I’M AN EXPERT HAGGLER AT GARAGE SALES

I wanted to highlight this video for a few reasons.

The first reason is because the story illustrates a humorous relationship between a seller and a buyer - something that we could leverage for client work e.g. Petco, American Airlines, etc.

The second reason is because it is based on a short story that was featured on this website, McSweeny's Internet Tendency. And while I understand that it's a blog run by a publishing company based in San Francisco, I'm not entirely certain if it's designed to be "open source" as it relates to scripted material - it'd be cool it was though...

In addition to the 50-Hour challenges, I'm also reminded of the book Micah inherited on a flight titled White Cargo, and how we had once talked about a kind of competition or exercise where you would flip to a random page in a random book and attempt to recreate a scene using only the available context.

HSE Little Things

I like this little series, the simplicity of the art style and the variation of simple cinematic shots. Still hope to do something close to this for a future project...Maybe not something so corporate, but something along the lines of a Hospice, where the idea isn't necessarily about selling something or teaching something.

Warlords of Draenor Trailer

I could be wrong, but I think any Blizzard Cinematic is a wonderful work of art. I am not sure if this one rocked my world, but still awesome. It's a good watch no matter what BUT if you want to know what is happening and why it's a big deal, look below the video. I kind of contains spoilers for the video.

What is happening?

(the bold words links)
This is a story of time travel and altering events. It's apparently a separate timeline so it won't mess with anything. Grom Hellscream (the main guy who refuses the cup) was supposed to drink the blood of Mannoroth (the big firey dude). This makes them super powerful, but also slaves to the Burning Legion.

Enter Garrosh Hellscream (the guy with the torch and tattooed chin guy), responsible for a civil war in the current Horde and only dreams of the old ways (blood and glory). He escapes a trial put on by the Pandaren for the destruction of the island and other horrific things he did there, and instead goes back in time to warn his father (the whole blood drinking thing) and helps create the Iron Horde who's main purpose is to conquer everything.

What is also interesting is Garrosh brings back technology. The giant spinning ball is something he used to fuel his war machines and it is neat to see it so crudely. So not only did he warn his Father, but he went back in time with a huge technology advancement.

Additional Information

Blizzard also wants people to know more about the enemies in the upcoming game and have created shorts to explain who they are. Here is a link to the trailer and also the first episode.

The amount of lore in the Warcraft Universe is crazy and if you read above, I hope you enjoyed it.

What is it you desire most?

I don't know what's going on in Thailand, but I dig it!  This is a perfect follow-up to our Hampton work around Well-Being and purpose.

TrueMove - Giving

This short film about giving is pretty moving, and it is what I see being possible when creating films to illustrate a value or a culture.  I think this type of work should be one source of inspiration as we continue to move forward with 'culture movement' type films.

Kevin Spacey Gets It!

I'm not sure if this has been posted here, but it's great insight into how content is delivered. "It's all story"

Larry King on getting seduced - Blank on Blank

This illustrates the power of a good story and how simple animation can help bring it to life - think RSA, the good ones. BUT, if your story is crap no amount of animation can save it - think RSA, the bad ones. It's also a fun story.

Ira Glass explains the building blocks of storytelling

Given all of the energy around the story arc these days, I was reminded of a great explanation Ira had about the building blocks of compelling stories. The moment of reflection (what we got at the Popeyes shoot in Milwaukee?), and the anecdote (what we went to New Orleans for?).
