AWAY

The other day Wegman and I were talking about the use of VFX in Dead Dixie California, the film he's been working on for the past year or so. Specifically, the almost unreal amount of planning that's required to pull off even the most basic effects. Ultimately, the conversation reminded me of this piece from Convolv, AWAY.

Aside from the really great FX, there's a really good story behind the production. Basically, the two filmmakers were going into the project completely blind and with very little experience. You can read the full story here.

This effects break down is crazy. And it is amazing how much they cut out. There are shadows on the blue screen and random shit on the green screen. We are about to go shoot VFX shots for Dixie and we are all worried about getting the green screen lit and these guys make it look easy.

Life After Pi

This goes out to all the talented VFX artist out there, even the ones who totally fuck up the Statue of Liberty.

A while back J.J. and I were talking about this story and mentioned somebody should make a documentary. So they did. It raises an interesting dialogue about the studio model, the future of filmmaking, and the role of visual artists in the field.
