Font Men

Really love this short piece from dress code about the work and process of artists Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones.  Fonts are one of those ultra-specific forms of art that most people probably don't stop to think about, but when you break down fonts and the reasoning behind them, you open up a whole world of interesting problems and solutions. I also really love the animation they have sprinkled throughout. I can't think of a better way to illustrate the subtle differences between a single font type.

I Made a Video this Past Weekend!

Here's a video I made over the weekend. A student at BGSU wanted to bring CHAARG, a women's fitness/health organization, to BGSU. Watch it first, then read my notes below. Comment your comments!!



I  was given 1 day to concept, script, and storyboard, 2 days to shoot, and half a day to edit.

• I used a 7D
• Almost entirely shot with the 28-135mm. Landscape, especially towards the end and shots of the different buildings were shot with the 16-35mm.
• No lighting. It was overcast the entire shoot. Had to work around the rain.
• VO was done in Studio A.

Things I liked/worked

• The animation. Short and simple.
• The story is okay. Could've used more work, though.
• Close ups of the runner were filmed with her running in place. I tried to get my hands on a steady-rig, but this worked out much better. I had a lot more control.
• Battery died right after the first take on the last shot. WINNING.
• I filmed more than I needed. I had a lot of footage to work with. I didn't feel like I was stretching clips thin.

Things I didn't like/didn't work

• The first quarter of the shoot I was on Aperture Priority. Dumbass!
• I wanted to foreshadow later clips (country road, gravel, corn)  in the beginning, but I couldn't get the edit right to make it feel natural or cool.
• Virtually no color correction. I took one pass, I'm so used to SpeedGrade's controls now. I didn't have time to fix a lot of the over exposure and flatness.
• I wish I was given more time to work on all areas of the video.

A blast from the past. One of the first movies I've ever created with my friends. It was for a high school English class. I made a film in the spirit Alfred Hitchcock in addition to my essay about his life and times.

And as a bonus, there's a trailer for a film we never created. The First, a thriller-horror about a friend and his deranged older brother that lives in the basement. I know, riveting...

The Past Re-imagined As The Future

Came upon a wonderful little video contest today that involves two of my favorite things: audio tracks from Free Music Archive and video from the Prelinger Archives. Maybe it's like Dave said and I am a glutton for punishment, but I think this will be far less stressful than Star Wars. I don't see the point in explaining much further when someone has taken the time to create an awesome video that does so.  However, for more information check out their site here. Willow - Sweater

I love when someone takes a concept that's been pretty well explored and takes it to the next level. That was definitely the case for this music video by Willow for his new song 'Sweater". Directed by Flip Sterckx. Here is the making of. Not much on the technical side of things, more or less just shows how many times the guy messed up trying to time with the projections.

Flabongo Nation

My older brother's friends have recently formed a cover band of sorts under the name of Flabongo Nation. If you don't know what a flabongo is there is a shot of a guy doing one at 1:32.  Anyways it was just a relaxing way to spend the 3rd of July.

The Politics of Competitive Board Gaming Amongst Friends

Came across this little piece and it reminded me of you guys for more than one reason. The main reason I thought it was relevant was the storytelling involved. Jay Cheel shot this as a way of experimenting with re-enactments for his larger upcoming project. Seeing as how we just finished Deloitte this really caught my eye. There are a lot of similarities and I just think it's a testament to how much more we can do with storytelling to enhance interviews.

The Specifics:

I shot this with the Panasonic AF100, using the following lenses: Nikon 50mm, Nikon 35mm, Panasonic Lumix 14mm. I didn’t do a whole lot for lighting aside from assisting some of the practical lights in Matt’s apartment (a 650 bounced off the ceiling), and stringing some coloured Christmas lights in the background for some visual points of interest. For the interviews, I used a single bulb cool light hung directly overhead the subjects along with a 250W tungsten key light (diffused X2) and another cool light as a back light.
