Everything is a Remix - Remastered

I could have sworn that made it was on to The Stew already but I couldn't find it when I searched. So here it is. Kirby Ferguson is a writer, filmmaker, speaker who has had a few appearances on Vimeo as well as the TED stage.

In this post I wanted to highlight one of his projects, the Everything is a Remix series. Originally distributed in four parts, Everything is a Remix explores how every idea is somehow predicated on another. Whether it's movies, music, technology, etc, you can draw connections to a preexisting thought, idea, or concept. This is a remastered version that combines all four parts into one film.

I think the subject matter is really interesting especially as it relates to the creative or vocational work we do and how we're often looking for something "original." After watching this, I definitely feel inspired, like I've been given a license to "steal..."

Update: The Stew's search function is not what I'd describe as "awesome." After posting this, I eventually did find one of the originals that was posted over a year ago...

Animation basics: The art of timing and spacing - TED-Ed

Josh and I were talking the other day about the merits of animation vs. design in successful animations.  Along with this being about some of the 12 rules all animators learn and use, it has an interesting point that the "superficial appearance of an object only tells you so much about it, it's only when it's in motion that you understand it's true nature."  I think it prompts me to think about the elements I'm animating a little more - What is the 'thing' made of?  How will it react in the world I've created?

The Art of the Metaphor - Jane Hirshfield

I watched this and immediately afterwards all I could think was, "Dear God...."  And probably not for the reasons you think.  It was more from a feeling of being joyfully overwhelmed.  This piece had so much going for it that my brain couldn't seem to handle it.  First off it's about metaphors;  something I deal with on a daily basis in my personal and professional work.  The way Jane talks about them is almost poetic.  In their very nature metaphors conjure emotion, but when Jane explains it that feeling is magnified.  That plus perfectly subtle animation makes for a metaphor overload.  I also love the art style they chose for this piece because it's vague enough to take on almost any shape and soft enough that it marries perfectly with Jane's voice.  Even though the design is simple, the animators at POCKO did a number of clever and fun things throughout the piece.  But I'll let you discover those on your own.
