Simple Silly Storytelling

I think this is a great example of story telling. It is simple yet overdramatic and they uses the 4th wall to convey that transition in a fun way. I think as we come off submerged's win and talk about what we could do next as a creative project this is an example of what is out there. The shots are well composed for the style and the sound design is great. But it is still not an overly polished image. The story also has light hearted moments that transition quickly into much heavier ones.

Ben and Matt talk about what effects and tricks they use most often clean up audio, to float dialogue on top of music, and more. The whole thing is pretty interesting even though they're mostly talking about Pro Tools not Audition.

The audio intimacy of a good NPR story and a great story overall. The close ups of the typewriter give great room for pacing.

Martin Scorsese - The Art of Silence

From the same guy who did the Visual Comedy post that prompted a lot of dialogue.  I think there are some really interesting nuggets in this, particularly the part about writing intentionally to allow sound designers to utilize silence.

Traveling Lights

Josh and I were talking about how great Samurai Jack was back in the day. We cited the an episode where there was a lot of creative minimalism to help drive home the notion of quiet and power.

This piece deftly utilizes iconography, a minimal color pallet, and artistic (as in knowing when enough is enough) usage of motion, shifting perspective, and immersive sound design.

43,000 Feet

This piece reminded me a little bit of a radio program; something like This American Life, Wiretap, or The Moth. While there are some really-really-awesome visuals, the sound has a life of it's own. There are also some fun animations and sharp writing. This piece has something for everyone.

Notes on Blindness

I was looking through my watch-laters on Vimeo and I wanted to highlight this piece from the New York Times (who has a lot of great videos, btw).

I really like Notes on Blindness not only because it's an interesting dramatization (a genre/style I would like to explore a little more) but because the way they give the viewer a feeling of blindness through the sound design and the selective focus.

My set was fairy simple.

I had fun doing this and I'm glad I did. I might take a crack at another one.
