Life After Pi

This goes out to all the talented VFX artist out there, even the ones who totally fuck up the Statue of Liberty.

A while back J.J. and I were talking about this story and mentioned somebody should make a documentary. So they did. It raises an interesting dialogue about the studio model, the future of filmmaking, and the role of visual artists in the field.

BGSU Class Project

I'm required to make a Holiday Card for my Video III class that is supposed to be "sent" to students from the university. It's due late Monday, February 24.

The only requirements is I have to use a camera layer, particles somehow, music, and voice over. I don't have voice over yet. Any suggestions? Any feedback from the video as it is? Thanks!

Canon Cinema EOS Reels

As much as I wish they were my reels, these are two reels from Canon that debuted at NAB and PhotoPlus in 2013 showcasing work created with the Cinema EOS series of cameras (C100, C300, C500, 5D, and 1DX).

There are two things that stood out to me about these reels...

Firstly, the C100, 300, and 500 share the same sensor but different guts so I'm surprised how different the images that they produce can be. Some look very cinematic while other are prone to that "video" look. I'm really interested in getting that film-look with our C100. And secondly, because everyone is posting their reels (be it real or fake - Brent), I like the way they incorporated musical changes and even sound effects into the reel. Things like the carefully placed chimes and echoes make it feel more like a trailer than a reel.

Gone - Jay Wells

This is the music video I helped film. During post production I quickly realized that it had not become what we set out for. There are some good elements, but mostly bad! I'm posting this mainly because, well I'm bound to put out some real bombs. And maybe someone sees something that I don't!

Storytelling is Joke Telling

Andrew Stanton once said "storytelling is joke telling." so here's bit of fun. Love the character by the way. Happy Hump Day.

I can't believe no one has posted this yet!

Shot all in one day, around the world, on an iPhone 5S!

And then here you get to see the fancy iPhone video equipment... and how big of a team they had!

RadioShack Super Bowl Commercial

If you haven't seen it yet, here is the RadioShack Commercial played during the Super Bowl. Below it is the "Behind-the-scenes". I enjoyed this commercial.

Their approach to a behind-the-scenes was interesting since it wasn't targeted toward film nerds, but it was made for everyone. The various celebrities endorsed RadioShack during their interviews.

Maybe we could do this for a client shoot where we use employees act actors and we ask them questions about the shoot. It creates a very unique connection to the message.

Everything is a Remix - Part 2

We've all heard the saying that nothing is original. Jarmucsh's words have been immortalized into posters all over the internet, Tarintino has admitted to unabashed thevery, and in 2013, 7/10 of the highest grossing films are either based on books, franchises, or other pre-existing works.

I've wanted to post these for a while and there are other episodes that are just as interesting.

Where does your inspiration come from? What is your muse?

Edgar Wright and the Art of Close-Ups

Most of us are familiar with Edgar Wright's cinematic handwriting; tongue-in-cheek humor, fast-paced zooms, and whip-pans. Here Wright explains his use of distinguished close-ups.

chimpnology

For those of you who don't know cyriak, you should probably check out his Youtube page before viewing this video below.  His style is, how do you say it, a bit different. But I love his work and I hope you will too, he even did Conan's Season 3 supercut, which you can see here.

Academy Awards: Best Visual Effects

This was an interesting "walk down memory lane" for me, and was a bit surprising to see things like the Lord of the Rings trilogy is over 10 years old now...
