2012 Vimeo Awards - Advertising

So I think this nearly five minute long commercial is pretty brilliant but I can't help but point out that it's a perfect example of how much recent advertising is riding on coattails of the Tim and Eric directorial approach; the ludicrous and in our face approach. Don't get me wrong, it's very funny. I laughed out loud. I just wonder what the next breakthrough will be...

Splitscreen - A Love Story

This is going to be my next approach to the video post cards... What a fun little piece; the shot at the end is a little creepy though... By the way. Split screen is the latest Vimeo Weekend Project...

Awesome Question

Hey dudes, I'm using the Awesome Stew as a sounding board for all of you.  I currently have a 500GB Lacie drive that I worry about more and more. I want to back it up, but I have no idea what the best way to do that is. Would love some suggestions.

2012 Vimeo Award Winners - Music Video

I thought the music video category would be a tall order to fill; there are a lot of music videos out there on Vimeo and they are arguably some of the most create videos that get posted. Ultimately, I think this one holds up pretty well...

Indie Game: The Movie

Just bought and watched this here and I had to share, if at least with Micah. A really well shot and well told documentary. It's amazing to see what kind of pressure these guys go through. Also if anyone wants to watch it I already purchased it so I can just give you a copy. Or you can support them and buy it yourself, your call.

Another Gotye video

The restraint shown in this piece is impressive.

Raven wishing to imitate the eagle.

Beautiful animation and story in this short. The movement and transitions with negative space are amazing.

2012 Vimeo Award Winners - Lyrical

Rather than post all thirteen winners at once (because I know things sometimes move quickly on the Awesome Stew) I'm going to post one winner a day... You may recognize this style. It's from the same folks who brought you Words.

Silly Symphony - Music Land (1935)

Saw this and it reminded me of the Root internal piece where everyone has an instrument attached to them.

Video + Drawing animation

We should add this idea to the red book. We have some really awesome artists here and could make something amazing.

BLIK

I'm sure most of you who follow Motionographer saw this, but I had to re-post anyway. This is longer than most pieces we make and this one was created with no dialogue, and still has a very compelling story. The sound design is great, and the character animation to capture feeling and mood with body language is great since there are no facial expressions.

Rapha Continental: Assynt

I want another Deloitte so that a juggernaut such as this can be made. Once again, an astounding work of branded entertainment in which both employees and the public can rally around. This also reminded me of Shattered posted by Chad just yesterday.

Shattered

This made me think of what Deloitte would have been with rock climbing as the metaphor. This short is pretty amazing, the footage is out of control, and the story is mesmerizing.
Here are a few behind the scenes looks into the making of this. I love the quote "filmmaking is about collaboration". I think we should push to continue to tell stories similar to this to illustrate an idea in a really powerful way.

Yasuaki Onishi: reverse of volume (RG)

I've had a small affinity for huge art installations since my first trip to Chicago in 2009 when I saw Olafur Eliasson's "Take Your Time". There's something about these other-worlds that are really cool and I've always wanted to try to incorporate them somehow into a scene somehow... This was recommended viewing from Sven...

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Man On Fire [Official Video]

Gotta say I love this song and this video. It's not trying to be perfect and a real genuine feeling radiates from this piece.

Bouncin' in Memphis

Here's another video postcard to add to the stew. I shot this all on my iPhone. The footage is straight out of the camera and the music is "Bounce" from my buddy Patrick Sweaney.

Alma Flamenca

Ground breaking concept? No. Brilliant execution, yes - I think so.

Subtle use of graphics and gentle editing. I found the titles to be especially nice. A wonderful piece by Spiros Rasidakis
